Korenstein Council Bid Endorsed by 2 Groups

Representatives of the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters on Wednesday endorsed Julie Korenstein in her bid to win the Los Angeles City Council seat held by Hal Bernson.

Laura Lake, a board member of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, said her group is backing Korenstein because of the candidate’s “record of environmental commitment.”

Lake cited the efforts of Korenstein, a member of the Los Angeles school board, to establish a recycling program in the school district and for her opposition to the mammoth Porter Ranch development in the hills north of Chatsworth.

Lake accused Bernson, a key Porter Ranch supporter, of promoting overdevelopment citywide through his chairmanship of the council’s powerful Planning and Land Use Committee, which approves development projects.

Bernson spokesman Hal Dash said the veteran councilman “has a solid environmental record.”

He said Bernson has been endorsed by Joseph T. Edmiston, executive director of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

As a lawmaker, he said, Bernson has authored a law to protect oak trees and pushed the city to buy Stony Point in Chatsworth and turn it into a park.

Besides Korenstein, four other candidates are running against Bernson in the April 9 city election.
