Mistrial Declared in Bank Robbery Conspiracy Case
A federal judge declared a mistrial Wednesday on the remaining conspiracy count against a woman charged with helping her husband rob six banks. The jury on Monday acquitted Julie Gambina, 47, of two counts of aiding and abetting her husband, Ralph Gambina, 43, in robbing a Wells Fargo Bank in Torrance on April 25, 1988, and a Security Pacific Bank in Buena Park on Aug. 29, 1988.
U.S. District Judge Wallace Tashima instructed the jury to continue deliberations on the remaining conspiracy charge against Julie Gambina and the other counts against her husband. But after the jury indicated Tuesday that it was hopelessly deadlocked and still had no verdict by the middle of the day Wednesday, Tashima decided to grant part of the prosecution’s motion for a mistrial.
