Panel Urges Funding of Glendale Rail Study
A $175,000 environmental study of a light-rail system connecting Glendale and Southern Pacific’s Taylor Yard in Glassell Park was endorsed this week by a county transportation panel.
A committee of the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission urged that the study be funded, commission spokeswoman Stephanie Brady said Thursday. She said the full commission is scheduled to vote Wednesday on the proposal.
Glendale City Manager David Ramsay said the city has agreed to pay for half of the study, which will assess the environmental effects of operating rail service between the Glassell Park yard and the Glendale Transportation Center at 400 W. Cerritos Ave.
Ramsay said Glendale officials favor the project to ease commuter traffic and bring additional shoppers to Glendale. He said Glendale officials hope such a service will eventually be extended to the city’s Grand Central industrial area and to Burbank Airport.
As proposed, the light-rail system would be built along existing Southern Pacific rights of way.
The study would take three to six months to complete, Ramsay said. No funding to construct the rail line has been allocated yet, he said.
