3 of 5 Bodies Found in Crash of Copter
Divers recovered the bodies of three of five U. S. servicemen killed last month when their helicopter crashed in a Salvadoran lake, officials said Thursday.
Two of the bodies were recovered Wednesday, and the first body was pulled out of the lake March 14, almost three weeks after the Feb. 25 crash, the Salvadoran army’s press department said.
The U.S. Army sent in teams with deep-water diving equipment after Salvadoran divers failed to reach the UH-1H Huey helicopter.
The wreckage is 280 feet below the surface of Lake Ilopango, 14 miles east of San Salvador. The helicopter crashed due to mechanical failure shortly after it took off from a military base east of the capital.
