Encinitas
An unidentified man was missing and presumed dead Friday after falling from a sailboat off Encinitas on Thursday night, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
A helicopter and two search vessels looked in vain for the man shortly after the accident was reported about 9 p.m., and again Friday morning, said Chief Michael Johnson.
Johnson said the man, who reportedly had been drinking, was wearing a life jacket when he fell off the trimaran Stress Relief, based in Oceanside. The missing man had been hitching a ride from Mission Bay to Oceanside, said boat operator Timothy Keehn, adding that he did not know the passenger’s name.
