GREAT WHITE “Hooked” Capitol **1/2

Share

Great White’s seventh and dumbest album provokes an array of involuntary reactions, from the grimace upon viewing the inside cover illustration of a naked woman straddling a fish hook to eye-rolling at profundities such as “Roller girls ain’t no teases / I know she’ll do just what she pleases for me.”

But the most insidious thing about the record is how it brings on uncontrollable foot tapping. Even the most intractable hater of dumb-rock would be hard-pressed to deny the p-a-a-a-r-t-y! appeal of Great White’s music. No wonder the album took just two weeks to jump into the Top 20.

“Call It Rock N’ Roll” is another in the band’s carefully calculated string of anthems for junior high school rock-star wanna-bes, but the chorus has an infectious hook that any pop fan will find difficult to shake.

And the Los Angeles quintet even comes up with a pretty power ballad or two: “Lovin’ Kind,” propelled by Jack Russell’s world-weary vocals, and a surprisingly tender version of the Small Faces’ “Afterglow.” Maybe there is Great White hope.
