Air Force Capt. Arthur M. Galvin, killed in a combat mission over Kuwait during the Gulf War, was remembered Saturday by city officials and dozens of former high school classmates as the teen-ager from Costa Mesa who went off to war.

About 200 people attended the memorial ceremony in Fairview Regional Park on Saturday which included a 21-gun salute.

“When I think of Arthur I think of the tender young years of my life,” said Nancy Kinzer, a former classmate of Galvin’s. “I’ve known Arthur since he was 12. . . . We decided if we don’t tell people, they aren’t going to know that he died for our country.”

Galvin, 33, was born in Newport Beach and raised in Costa Mesa. He attended Estancia High School and graduated in 1975.

Galvin was killed Jan. 31 when his plane was shot down over Kuwait.
