AP Sports Editors Honor The Times in 5 Writing Categories

The Los Angeles Times was named in five separate writing categories in 1990 national competition conducted by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Elliott Almond, John Cherwa, Alan Drooz, Bill Dwyre, Maryann Hudson and Danny Robbins were awarded second place in the investigations category for their coverage of the death of Hank Gathers and its aftermath. Julie Cart’s series on South Africa finished fourth in the enterprise category.

Among those receiving honorable mention were Hudson’s look at Aaron Crump, Gathers’ son, in the feature division; Robbins’ coverage of the problems with Nevada Las Vegas’ basketball team in news event and Jim Murray in columns.

The Times had previously been named a top-10 section both daily and Sunday by APSE.
