Aztecs Defeat Colorado State

Former Fallbrook High player Bill Dunckel had three hits, including a triple to lead off an eight run seventh inning, to lead San Diego State to a 13-1 victory over visiting Colorado State in a Western Athletic Conference game. Dunckel also drove in two runs and scored twice.

Brent Ferguson, who had a two-run triple, and Rick Page also had three hits.

Winning pitcher Jerry Stafford (2-0) allowed just four hits through eight innings. Walt Bills pitched the ninth, allowing one hit.

SDSU improved to 19-7, 4-0. Colorado State is 8-13, 0-4.

Santa Clara (16-4, 10-7) got 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief from John Hennelly and scored a 5-3 victory over University of San Diego (12-17-2, 6-10), sweeping the three-game West Coast Conference series.

USD led 2-1 entering the fourth but Santa Clara’s Adam Melhuse tied the game with a leadoff home run. Santa Clara took the lead later in the inning. USD pitcher James Ferguson (2-5) took the loss.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU’s Ricardo Herrera beat Chet Crille, 6-3, 6-3, to lead the Aztecs to a 6-0 sweep of Washington in a nonconference match. The Aztecs clinched the match in singles play and did not compete in doubles.

No. 5 singles player Jeff Belloli was the most impressive winner, defeating Knute Lund, 6-1, 6-3. SDSU is 10-3, Washington 7-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

University of San Diego won all but one match to beat visiting Brown University, 8-1, in a nonconference match. Kara Brady, playing No. 5 singles, lost only one game in her straight-set victory over Terri Esterowitz.

USD’s Tonya Fuller, ranked 10th nationally, won in three sets and Tuck Kacharoen, ranked 33rd, won in two. USD, ranked 17th, is 9-7. Brown is 7-4.
