Safety in Rail Projects Saves County $10 Million

Share

An insurance company Monday presented a $10-million check to the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission for superior worker-safety programs during rail and subway construction.

“These savings mean lower costs for Los Angeles County taxpayers when it comes to providing mass transit,” said Ed McSpedon, president and chief executive officer of the Rail Construction Corp., the Transportation Commission’s rail subsidiary. He attributed the good record to the division’s aggressive safety program.

A four-foot-long replica of the $10.1-million check was presented to the Rail Construction Corp. board by the Argonaut Insurance Co. of Menlo Park.

The dividend stems directly from workers’ compensation insurance that Rail Construction Corp. provided to contractors and subcontractors working on Metro Rail Blue Line and early Metro Rail Red Line construction. The insurance protects workers from income losses as a result of job-related injuries or disabilities.
