Former Policeman DeWid Leads Early in Senior PBA Tournament

Bill DeWid, 50, a retired police detective from Warren, Mich., was the leader after six games of the $55,000 Senior PBA tournament Monday at Cal Bowl in Lakewood.

With a 1,384 total, DeWid was 29 pins ahead of Texan John Handegaard in the opening round of the four-day, 46-game event, which has a field of 144 bowlers age 50 and over. DeWid had games of 195, 268, 258, 268, 181 and 214 for a 230 average.

Among those in the top 15 were Hall of Famers Les Zikes (seventh), Teata Semiz (eighth) and Dick Weber (tied for 11th).

“I retired from the force last Thanksgiving to join the senior tour,” DeWid said. “It’s my fifth event and I’ve never won. But it’s the first time I’ve been in the lead. I hope I stay there.”
