Times staff writer John Sullaway interviewed these second- and third-grade students at Altadena Elementary School in Altadena for this occasional feature appearing in San Gabriel Valley View.

* Enrique Gutierrez; Third grade, 8 years old: “I told my mom the garage was on fire. She said, ‘Don’t scare me like that no more.’ She grounded me for one day.”

* Aneesah Williams; Third grade, 8 years old: “I told my dad there was a needle sticking in the bed. He sat on the bed and started screaming.”

* Sarah Rodriguez ; Third grade, 8 years old: “I got a duck whistle from Jack-In-The-Box. When I got home I started playing it. When my mom was in the other room I blew it and scared her.”

* C’mayla Neal; Third grade, 8 years old: “After I walk home, I usually call my mom. One time I called her it was April Fools’ Day. I said the house is wrecked-up and robbed and I said ‘April Fools’ Day!”’

* John Swain; Third grade, 9 years old: “I played a trick on my best friend Jeffrey. One day we were at school. I told him I could give him a swing. We covered the swings up. When he came back, we said ‘April Fools!”’

* Jihad Abdul-Jabbaar; Second grade, 7 years old: “When my mom was in bed upstairs, my brother was downstairs getting something to drink. I said Freddie Krueger’s there. He said ‘Mom, he’s messin’ with me!”’
