Maxwell Sells Pergamon for $768 Million: British publisher Robert Maxwell agreed to sell Pergamon Press, the original scientific publishing core of his Maxwell Communication Corp. The company was sold to Elsevier for 440 million pounds ($768 million), the Dutch publisher said. The deal will allow Maxwell, who this month bought the New York Daily News newspaper, to cut his company’s debt of about $1.7 billion. For Elsevier, already the world’s largest publisher of scientific journals, the deal will further solidify its position.
