Diabetic Wins Suit Over Arm Broken by Officer

A jury began hearing evidence Thursday to decide how much money to award a diabetic whose arm was broken when a Glendale police officer yanked the semi-conscious man out of a truck.

Jurors had deliberated five hours Wednesday before ruling that Marvin J. Riley, 48, was the victim of city negligence. Riley is seeking $1 million in a police brutality suit against Glendale.

Officer Ashraf Mankarios testified that Riley stumbled when Mankarios pulled him out of the truck on Aug. 22, 1986. Mankarios told jurors that Riley had tried to hit him when Mankarios leaned into the truck to wake him. Riley had suffered an insulin reaction. He also suffered nerve damage to his arm, and had a heart attack and kidney problems because of surgery to correct the problem, his attorney, John Denove, said.
