ORANGE : Children Deputized as ‘Drought Busters’

Children visiting the Holiday Skate Center on Friday celebrated the start of spring break with a ceremony deputizing them as official drought busters.

Mayor Gene Beyer appointed more than 300 schoolchildren as drought deputies with a swearing-in ceremony that launched a week of conservation awareness activities at the skating rink.

“They’re as important as anyone else in solving our water shortage problem,” Beyer said of the young deputies. “We want to stress that the problem is not over just because (we’ve had) rain.”

Jim Blee, operations manager of the skating center, estimated that about 2,000 young people will visit the rink during spring break. The rink’s popularity makes it a perfect place to tell children about issues such as water conservation, he said.

If youngsters learn to conserve while brushing their teeth, they’ll pass the lesson on to their families, he said.
