Senate OKs Agency to Clean Up Ground Water

Share

The state Senate on Thursday approved legislation to create a new “super-agency” to coordinate the cleanup of polluted ground water in the San Gabriel Valley. The bill now goes to the Assembly for consideration.

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles), said his measure would give environmentalists and homeowners a voice in water policy in the San Gabriel Valley by establishing a 13-member public board with authority to regulate ground water pumping.

The measure passed 22 to 6. Some of the lawmakers opposing it expressed concern that rather than help the pollution cleanup process, the new agency simply would create a new layer of bureaucracy.
