A 24-year-old East San Diego man, stabbed Thursday night during a fight with a friend, died Friday at Mercy Hospital as a result of his wounds, authorities said.

Gilmar Vasquez, of the 4000 block of Chamoune Avenue, was stabbed repeatedly in the leg and upper left torso about 9:45 p.m. Thursday, during a fight over a friend’s car in the 4400 block of University Avenue, police Lt. Dan Berglund said.

Vasquez was rushed by paramedics to Mercy Hospital, where he died of multiple stab wounds at 4:15 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

Mario de Leon, 20, was taken into custody shortly after the stabbing, when police followed a trail of blood from the stabbing scene to De Leon’s home in the 4100 block of Highland Avenue, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

De Leon allegedly cut two of his fingers during the fight, apparently with his own knife, Berglund said.
