Rape Case Prompts Measures by OCC

Share

Let me say, if we had it to do over, we would not hesitate to publish information college-wide on an attack of anyone on the campus (“Word Traveled Slowly in Rape Case,” March 22). There was some initial delay, which resulted from not knowing the identity of the person or the precise details; but still, in retrospect, we learned we should not wait.

If such a thing occurs again, I will be certain that the information is made available promptly to everyone--not just to security staff, as was the case in mid-March. Such action, I believe, would best benefit all students.

Fortunately, there was no incident in the intervening six school days before the posting of the composite picture of the attacker. Additionally, it should be clear that the college has made a substantial commitment to thwarting any such activity.

For example, last month emergency phones were installed all over the campus with a direct link to security. Second, OCC has recently completed a major lighting renovation to ensure that the campus is well lit. Third, within the last month, we have increased security on and around the campus and now have it in effect 24 hours.

Fourth, we have a campus security escort service, whereby students who are concerned about getting safely to their vehicles in any parking lot may call Campus Security and will be escorted to their cars. Fifth, the college sponsored a Rape Awareness Week in an attempt to raise the consciousness of students to the possibility of that danger anywhere.

A composite picture identifying the attacker has been placed on every campus bulletin board. In addition, 15,000 flyers including information on how to prevent an assault or an attack of any kind will be placed on every car in the parking lots.

The vice president for Student Services has been assisting the victim of this terrible attack, and our concern continues to be her safety and well-being. I have equally great concern for all of our 24,200 students. You may be certain that in the future, information on any such incident will be promptly published.
