AIDS Patient to Go on Trial for Biting Officers, Nurse

A North Hollywood man who prosecutors say knew he had AIDS when he bit and spit bloody saliva on law enforcement officers and a nurse is scheduled to go on trial today on four charges of assault with intent to do great bodily injury.

The case, in which the patient is accused of willfully attempting to spread the deadly virus by biting and spitting, is apparently the first of its kind in Los Angeles County, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Jacquelyn Lacey.

Michael L. Newbrough, 24, has pleaded not guilty in the assaults at two hospitals last year. None of the four men who were the victims of the alleged assaults has contracted the AIDS virus, but are continually being tested for symptoms, Lacey said.
