Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : U.S. Backs Low-Fat Diets for Children

The federal government recommended that children, as well as adults, follow a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet to reduce their risk of heart disease. “This is the major cause of death in adults in this country and we should not miss the opportunity to prevent the disease in children,” said Dr. Ronald Lauer, chairman of the panel that drafted recommendations for the National Cholesterol Education Program of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
