Spring Football at UCLA Opens

The UCLA football team, planning to capitalize on the return of quarterback Tommy Maddox, will open spring practice today at Spaulding Field, the first step in what Coach Terry Donahue hopes will be the Bruins’ first winning season since 1988.

“We’re going to lead with our best foot forward, and that means building our football team around Tommy Maddox,” Donahue said of the sophomore who completed 55.7% of his passes last season. “I’m sure that comes as no surprise. It is clear Tommy Maddox is the heart of our offensive team.”

Drills will conclude on May 4. The Bruins, coming off a 5-6 season, will open the season on Sept. 7 against Brigham Young at the Rose Bowl.
