Charles D. Akins; Actor

Charles D. Akins, who appeared in several films since the 1960s, has died at his North Hollywood home. He was 54.

Akins died Wednesday of a heart attack, said his mother, Ruby Akins.

Akins was born in Bennington, Okla. He used the screen name of Dean Charles and appeared in “The Alamo” (1960) shortly before coming to California. He portrayed a bank teller in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and a court reporter in “Funny Girl” (1968). He also appeared in “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962), “Faces” (1968), “WarGames” (1983) and a Miller Lite beer commercial with baseball broadcaster Bob Uecker, among other appearances. He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild and Screen Extras Guild.

Akins is survived by his mother, Ruby Akins of North Hollywood; sisters Francine Mounger of Sherman Oaks and Maxine Graves of North Hollywood. His father, Boyd Akins, died in 1984.

Graveside services are pending. J.T. Oswald Mortuary in North Hollywood is handling the arrangements.
