THOUSAND OAKS : Housing Group Begins CLU Chapter
The founders of an international nonprofit organization which provides housing for low-income families will lecture at Cal Lutheran University today to kick off the new campus chapter.
Habitat for Humanity, a grass-roots organization, helps low-income families build or renovate their houses with volunteer labor and donated supplies, said Mark Matthews, a Cal Lutheran emeritus professor who founded the local chapter.
Families participate in the construction and repay the cost of the house or renovation with a no-interest loan paid over a period of about 20 years, Matthews said.
Habitat for Humanity founders Linda and Millard Fuller will lecture at the university today and inaugurate the campus chapter, Matthews said.
The Cal Lutheran chapter has been in existence since January but has no formal membership yet, Matthews said.
“There are university chapters all over the United States, so we’re not new in that sense, but we are new in that we are the first to affiliate the university chapter with several local congregations,” Matthews said.
The university chapter works with seven local churches, but anyone is welcome to join, Matthews said.
The lecture, scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Preus-Brandt Forum, is open to the public.
