The Real Thing: What the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Conn., thought for 50 years was just a copy of Jusepe de Ribera’s Baroque masterpiece “The Mocking of Christ” has turned out to be the real thing. A renowned art dealer noticed the work in a storage room and then offered to buy it, causing the museum to take a closer look. Its estimated value soared from $50,000 to between $750,000 and $1.25 million.
