HemaCare Corp. Sells Plasma Donor Centers

HemaCare Corp. in Sherman Oaks, a struggling company that provides blood products and blood-related medical services, said it agreed to sell the San Diego and Torrance specialty plasma donor centers of its wholly owned subsidiary, MD Laboratories Inc., to AM-Rho Laboratories Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., for $225,000.

Hal Lieberman, HemaCare’s president, said the sale was designed to help return the company to profitability. HemaCare lost more than $1 million in 1990, and Lieberman said the plasma centers being sold didn’t meet anticipated revenue goals.

HemaCare said it has already received $37,500 from AM-Rho and another $37,500 payment will be made when the necessary government licenses are transferred. The balance of the purchase price will be paid over three to four years, it said. Closing of the sale is contingent on Federal Drug Administration approval.

MD Laboratories will continue to operate its West Hollywood plasma center, where an AIDS research program is being conducted.
