Ameritech: The telecommunications company said it earned $283 million in the first quarter, down 7% from a year earlier. The Chicago-based parent of Bell companies serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin said its revenue edged up to $2.63 billion from $2.62 billion. The company said its local telephone units added 32% fewer lines in the just-ended quarter compared to year-earlier levels. The firm reported a 42.5% expansion in mobile and cellular lines during the quarter.
