Merck & Co.: The Rahway, N.J.-based pharmaceutical firm said its first-quarter earnings rose 20% to $483.5 million, compared to the year-ago period. Sales jumped 17% to $2.049 billion. The company cited strong unit volume gains, better product mix, continued cost controls, increased productivity and a lower tax rate. Also, sales were particularly strong for Merck’s antibiotic Primaxin, the animal anti-parasitic Ivermectin and a number of newer products.
