Aztecs Defeat Toreros With Ease

San Diego State’s men’s tennis team had no trouble with the University of San Diego Tuesday, defeating the Toreros, 7-2, in a nonconference match. The Aztecs got a big victory at No. 1 doubles from Jeff Belloli and Dax Peterson, who defeated 17th-ranked Jose Luis Noriega and Kevin Bradley, 6-4, 6-2. Tenth-ranked Noriega beat Ricardo Herrera, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. SDSU’s Joe McDonough defeated Frederick Axsater, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Kerry Safdie, Peterson and Belloli also had singles victories for the Aztecs.

USD announced the signing of Ignacio Martinez, a two-time section singles champion from St. Augustine High. Martinez, of Tijuana, is ranked No. 1 in Baja.

Point Loma Nazarene got victories from its Nos. 4 through 6 players--Sean Willette, Andrew Patton and John Norton--and benefited from an injury to Loyola Marymount’s No. 1 player to take a 5-3 nonconference victory.

PLNC’s No. 1, Hans Hoegstedt, earned a 3-6, 6-4 victory when Loyola’s Scott Smith retired with a shoulder injury. Because Smith could not play his scheduled doubles match, Mattias Rendefots and Alvaro Macholi won by default for the Crusaders (14-3).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sixteenth-ranked SDSU defeated unranked USC, 5-3, in a nonconference match in Los Angeles. The match was highlighted by a victory at No. 3 singles by Nicole Storto over former Aztec Julie Tullberg, 7-5, 6-1. It was Storto’s fifth singles victory in a row. SDSU’s Eva Olivarez defeated Courtney Rose, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. The Aztecs’ No. 3 doubles team of Susan Hawke and Shawn Egan clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kristen Quigley and Cindy Bloomquist. SDSU improved to 11-8.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego wasted Bryan Flanagan’s complete-game performance in a 2-0 loss at fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills. Flanagan scattered eight hits and struck out four. UCSD (12-17) had just one extra-base hit, a double by Steve Noland. Dominguez Hills improved to 22-14-1.

Kevin Herde’s homer broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the eighth to give the University San Diego a 6-5 victory over visiting UC Irvine in a nonconference game. Herde went three for four with two runs scored and the Toreros’ Rick Doane hit a two-run homer in the second. Pat Crema pitched 8 1/3 innings to get the victory and Chris Collins recorded his sixth save by inducing UCI’s Chris Facione to bounce into a double play. USD improved to 15-23-2, UCI fell to 19-24.

San Diego State walloped U.S. International, 17-0, at Smith Field. The Aztecs, ranked 21st in the ESPN/Collegiate Baseball poll, piled up 19 hits and used seven pitchers who combined for 12 strikeouts and one walk.

Derek Vinyard was three for three with three stolen bases, two RBIs and two runs scored. He played just four innings. Scott Dennison (double, three RBIs) and Steve Dietz were each three for five for SDSU (30-10). Just eight of the Aztecs’ 17 runs were earned. The Gulls had two hits. Greg Shepard had both of them. USIU is 11-29.

Point Loma Nazarene upset Southern California College, 10-9, in a wild Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma. The Crusaders (15-23, 2-11) got a one-out single from Jason Huntley, which sent home pinch-runner Clint Ellison with the winning run. SCC (24-16, 10-3) scored five times in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Rich Miller was six for six with two home runs and four RBI for PLNC. Miller and Huntley (four for five) hit back-to-back homers in the eighth. Mark Ratekin, who opened the 10th with a single, also homered and picked up the victory in relief.

SOFTBALL

Ann Ibarra of Cal State Dominguez Hills beat visiting UC San Diego twice, 2-0 and 3-2. Dana Chaiken went three for four for UCSD (15-16) in the second game. Dominguez Hills, ranked 10th in Division II, improved to 28-12-1.
