Water Conservation: The pool is still filled and the lagoon as blue as ever at the Disneyland Hotel. But in this fifth year of drought, hotel officials say they are stepping up efforts to conserve water.

Each of the hotel’s 1,132 rooms is being fitted with a low-flow shower head. In addition, all of the 304 rooms in the Sierra tower--the last of the hotel’s three towers to be renovated under a refurbishment program--are getting low-flush toilets. Instead of the usual 5 gallons per flush, the new toilets use 1.5 gallons.

The hotel has also planted more drought-resistant grasses and is watering less frequently and only at night when less moisture is lost to evaporation. Drip irrigation systems have been installed in many flower beds.

Officials are also studying the idea of equipping public restrooms with sensor-operated faucets that turn the water on when an object is placed under them.
