Rider Ends Wait, Signs With UNLV
For the Nevada Las Vegas basketball staff, waiting for J. R. Rider has been almost as bad as waiting for Godot.
Rider, a 6-foot-5 swingman from Antelope Valley College, has long been committed to UNLV but did not sign until Wednesday.
Antelope Valley officials thought he would sign Tuesday and, therefore, called a press conference. A spokesman in the UNLV sports information department, after hearing about the press conference, believed Rider did sign Tuesday.
Rider, however, decided to wait and he pushed the press conference back a day. Even then, Antelope Valley Coach Newton Chelette was not sure if Rider would sign Wednesday.
The UNLV coaches, leery of any misstep regarding NCAA rules, were keeping mum on the situation.
Rider averaged 34.1 points a game for the Marauders this season.
