Cal State Enrollment

Once again The Times has covered an education story with hardly any reference to teachers, students and learning. One would have thought that education would have been at the heart of a story about the appointment of the new chancellor of California State University (“Cal State Turns to Business World to Find Chancellor,” April 5).

We learned about Maxxam Inc., Pacific Lumber Co., a savings and loan association, fund-raising and university financing. But we know practically nothing about Barry Munitz’s educational philosophy, his commitment to academic freedom and open access to higher education, or his understanding of the major transformation that any university needs to undergo to prepare it and its students for the 21st Century.
