Cal State Enrollment

Share

I was taken aback by the article “Cal State System Is Taking Steps to Reduce Enrollment” (Part A, April 9). It stands to reason that any CSU system “plan to ‘ratchet down’ future Cal State enrollment to meet continually tight state budget cuts” will adversely impact the growing Latino community.

Gov. Pete Wilson appears too eager to destroy an excellent university system at a time when we will experience a growing need for first-class, low-cost public university educations. For the future and general welfare of all the people of California, I really hope the anticipated cuts for the CSU system are grossly exaggerated.

As it is, America as a whole spends less on education than two-thirds of the world’s advanced nations. We are less and less able to compete in the world economy and the politicians blame Japan. Well this time it’s not the Japanese hurting Americans, it’s Americans hurting Americans.

I hold an undergraduate degree from Cal State San Bernardino (and my law degree from Western State University College of Law, Fullerton) and I decry Gov. Wilson’s deep cuts of the CSU budget, which portend more gloom-and-doom for the future of our state and our people. I would not relish being a student in today’s antagonistic posture toward CSU and education in general.
