A police officer fired a shot at an armed man Thursday shortly before the man, who was not hit, was arrested in connection with the robbery of a Motel 6 at 13100 Golden West St., police said.

Westminster Police Lt. Bob Burnett said the suspect, who was not identified, fled west in a car after the 5:15 p.m. robbery and was pursued by police.

After about a mile, he said, the suspect stopped his car, got out and tried to run from the officers, he said. But as the suspect was getting out the car, an officer ordered him to stop, Burnett said.

“The suspect turned with a gun in hand toward the officer,” Burnett said. “The officer fired one shot at the suspect as he tried to gain cover behind a parked car. Fortunately for the suspect, (the officer) missed.”

The suspect then ran but was captured as he was trying to scale a chain-link fence at 13602 Milton Ave., Burnett said.

A .22-caliber, semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect suffered a cut to the forehead when he tried to climb the fence, Burnett said.
