A production closely modeled on the original Petipa-Ivanov “Swan Lake” by the Royal Ballet of Great Britain in August and the world premiere of a new “Nutcracker” by American Ballet Theatre highlight the 1991-92 dance season, announced today in Costa Mesa.

The new staging of “Nutcracker” for ABT will be Nov. 29-Dec. 8. The ABT will also return in February, 1992. There will also be a return engagement of the National Ballet of Canada, Oct. 8-13, 1991.

The Royal Ballet will make an exclusive West Coast engagement Aug. 6-11, an ironic scheduling as the Royal will be in competition with the ABT’s return to the Music Center, which also begins Aug. 6.

The Royal’s production of “Swan Lake,” staged by artistic director Anthony Dowell in consultation with Tchaikovsky-ballet scholar Roland John Wiley, premiered in Great Britain in 1987. The Royal, which will be making its first West Coast appearance in 12 years, also will dance a program of repertory by Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan and David Bintley.

ABT’s new staging of the “Nutcracker” will be by Canadian choreographer Brian MacDonald. ABT also will dance Vladimir Vasiliev’s staging of “Don Quixote,” Feb. 4-9. Both new stagings were necessitated by the abrupt departure of artistic director Mikhail Barsyhnikov in 1989, who took his choreography with him.

National Ballet of Canada, which appeared at the Center in 1988, will dance Ronald Hynd’s story ballet “The Merry Widow” and a mixed bill including “Paquita,” John Cranko’s “Concerto for Flute and Harp” and William Forsythe’s “the second detail.”

Subscription tickets will range from $62 to $206; they will include four events--one each by the Royal Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada, and both ABT story ballets. Subscription tickets will go on sale June 2. Tickets for individual programs will go on sale about six weeks before each engagement. Information: (714) 556-2787.
