The government will require that light trucks and vans made in 1994 and thereafter have high-mounted center brake lights.

When all vans and light trucks are equipped with such lights, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday, between 65,000 and 90,000 rear-end collisions will be prevented each year.

Jerry Ralph Curry, the agency’s administrator, said the warning lights will prevent 19,200 to 27,400 injuries each year and save between $103 million and $143 million in damage to vehicles.
