Land and Water Trips
OARS, P.O. Box 67, Angels Camp, Calif. 95222, (209) 736-4677. Outdoor Adventure River Specialists is one of many companies specializing in rafting trips. OARS’ trips in California, the Southwest, Northern Rockies and Alaska range from one to 17 days and cost $64 to $3,830.
The majority of trips are offered April through September. Although there are few prerequisites, some companies require rafters to be at least 7 years of age, and basic swimming skills are highly recommended.

This autumn’s 100-mile drive between Mammoth Lakes and Independence, pictured on the cover, is scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 3. Cost is $650.
Basic riding experience is necessary. It’s also recommended that riders be in good physical condition.
