Alhambra : Postponement on Sign Law

Share

The City Council, after hearing protests from several business owners, Monday voted 4 to 0 to postpone indefinitely enforcement of the city’s sign ordinance.

Assistant City Manager P. Michael Paules had suggested that since the sign ordinance was passed in 1985 and businesses have had more than five years to bring their signs into compliance, each of the 300 business owners who have not complied should be given one more warning, then fined $275.

The ordinance reduces the size and number of signs, outlaws signs above the roof line and prohibits blinking or animated signs. However, several owners of businesses on Valley Boulevard objected that requiring them to replace their signs during a recession would be a financial hardship.
