Career Honors : Hall of Fame inductee Virginia Mayo combines roles as an actress, painter and grandmother.

Actress Virginia Mayo of Thousand Oaks will be honored for achievement in a career that spans several generations Monday when she is inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Time of Your Life Expo.

During the 1940s and ‘50s, Mayo starred in more than 45 motion pictures, including “White Heat” with James Cagney, “Captain Horatio Hornblower” with Gregory Peck and “The Silver Chalice” with Paul Newman.

Mayo was paired with Danny Kaye in a series of musical comedies, including “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “A Song Is Born.” Later, she performed many theatrical roles and more recently has appeared in such television shows as “Murder, She Wrote” and “Santa Barbara.”

The awards recognize people who “personify the fact that often the best is yet to come in the 50-plus years,” said Sybil Semar, executive director of Opportunities and Services for Seniors Inc., which sponsors the expo.

Other senior citizens to be honored during the three-day expo are Beverly Garland, Lew Ayres, Dr. George Fishbeck, Jackie Stewart, Buddy Ebsen and Ralph Edwards.

Mayo said that when she’s not oil painting, she still enjoys a good part when it comes along. But now her favorite role is grandmother to three grandsons, who range in age from 11 to 16.

The award is an honor, Mayo said. “I think older people should stick together. They should be looked after and entertained so that no one is lonely.”

The eighth annual Time of Your Life Expo will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday through Monday. It is billed as the world’s largest event of its kind and the only major exposition in Southern California that targets adults over the age of 50.

The expo will feature celebrity appearances and entertainment, door prizes, and discounts on many products and services. Several organizations and businesses in Ventura County will be among the more than 450 exhibitors.

A new seminar, entitled “Caring for an Older Person: Problems and Solutions,” will provide a panel of experts on gerontology from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Agoura Hills Parks and Recreation Department will hold its Senior Expo ’91 on Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Agoura Hills Recreation Center, 30610 Thousand Oaks Blvd. The event will feature speakers on topics of interest to older people and more than 24 booths and exhibitors. Shirley Radding, director of the long-term care ombudsman program in Ventura County, will explain what needs to be considered when making decisions about long-term care for your parents or yourself at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Education Center 1, Pleasant Valley Hospital, 2309 Antonio Ave., Camarillo. The following classes are available for the AARP-sponsored “55 Alive/Mature Driving Program,” a two-day course designed for the needs of older motorists. Only people age 50 and older may enroll and space is limited. Cost is $8 per person. It will be held at Wilson Senior Center, 350 N. C St., Oxnard, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 1 and 2. The Time of Your Life Expo opens at the Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angles, on Saturday and will run through Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Limited seating on bus tours from Ventura County to the expo is available for senior citizens. The cost varies and includes admission to the expo. Passengers must arrive 15 minutes before departure time.
