Man Fined $15,395 for Dumping Bleach
The operator of a now-closed Van Nuys laundry was ordered Thursday to pay a $15,395 fine for dumping bleach onto the ground outside his facility, Los Angeles City Atty. James K. Hahn announced.
Kyung Hong, 32, of Simi Valley was sentenced by Los Angeles Municipal Judge Susan E. Isacoff after pleading no contest to a charge of illegally disposing of a hazardous waste, which was used to stone-wash denim jeans.
Hong operated Homeway Laundry & Cleaners on Calvert Street before it closed last year, said Deputy City Atty. Teresa Lujan, who handled the case.
Bleach that Hong dumped on the ground would “flow into the drain at Homeway and eventually flow untreated into the city sewer,” Hahn said.
He termed the dumped chemicals “very toxic to humans.”
The laundry first came to the attention of authorities two years ago when it was successfully prosecuted for dumping bleach at the Calabasas Landfill, Hahn said.
