STANTON : $313,000 in Cuts OKd on Civic Center Plan

The City Council has approved changes to the planned new Civic Center that will cut more than $313,000 from the cost of the project, city officials said.

The council decided to cut 44 parking spaces from the garage, leaving 202 spaces, City Manager Terry Matz said. The project will be built on the southwest corner of Katella Avenue and Cedar Street.

The revised plans, which bring the cost of the project to $5 million, also increase the size of the recreation building by 1,700 square feet. Plans now show that the Civic Center will be 12,800 square feet and the recreation center 16,000 square feet.

Mayor Sal Sapien and Councilmen Joe Harris and Don Martinez voted at Tuesday night’s meeting to approve the changes, with Councilmen David John Shawver and Harry Dotson--who both oppose the project altogether--voting against the plan alterations.

Shawver said Thursday that the council and public had not been given enough time to review the environmental impact report, that the project did not fully address traffic and drainage and that he wants the money spent instead on redevelopment to generate city revenue.

Matz said construction should begin by the end of the year and be completed in fall, 1992.
