From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The Yugoslav army sent tanks and armored vehicles into several villages in the Republic of Croatia to prevent clashes between Serbs and Croats, the country’s biggest ethnic groups. The Tanjug news agency said Yugoslavia’s collective state presidency scheduled an emergency session in Belgrade to discuss the sharp rise in tensions in the republic. The agency said the army had blocked roads around Kijevo and other villages in southern Croatia where Croatian officials had set up police stations last week, angering local Serbs.
