A Los Angeles woman was killed Tuesday morning when the car in which she was riding struck a freeway embankment, overturned several times and ejected her, an investigator for the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office said.

Angelica Maria Rios, 23, of Pacoima was returning home from a trip to Tijuana when her friend, Jose Ochoa, 21, of Duarte, failed to negotiate a sweeping curve while driving on Interstate 5 half a mile north of Lomas Santa Fe Drive and struck the embankment at 12:43 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

Rios, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, county medical investigator Charles Kelly said. She died at the scene.

Ochoa was being held Tuesday afternoon on $10,000 bail in the County Jail in Vista on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while over the legal alcohol limit and vehicular manslaughter, a jail spokesman said.

Ochoa suffered minor injuries, a CHP officer said.
