FULLERTON : Airport Gives Tour to Boost Business

Share

In hopes of drumming up more business, Fullerton Airport recently gave a tour to about 27 members of the city’s Chamber of Commerce.

Since 1980, use of the airport has been steadily dropping. During the 1970s--its peak period--the airport averaged about 265,000 flight operations a year. Today, the number is about 150,000.

Airport Director Roland Elder said the tour on Wednesday was intended to spark more interest in the facility from local businesses. He said the tour was organized by officials from the city and the airport.

Elder attributed the airport’s declining number of flights to complicated air space rules, the high cost of operating a plane and fewer pleasure flights. The Fullerton Airport is the only general aviation airport in Orange County.

“The (Federal Aviation Administration) has added a lot of complexity to airspace,” Elder said. “This makes it very difficult for the pleasure flier. You have to know what you’re doing up there now.”

While the number of flights per year has dropped, Elder said the airport is not losing any money. He said the airport’s hangars are actually full.

“The airport fund is healthy,” Elder said. “We’d just like to see more flights.”
