Deputies Shoot 2 Youths in Lennox

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded two reported gang members in the Lennox area Friday night after allegedly being fired upon by the youths.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman, Deputy Mary Landreth, said the incident began about 10:20 p.m. when uniformed deputies were on a stakeout at 104th Street and Budlong Avenue. The location, she said, was under surveillance because it is believed to be used by area gang members to distribute weapons.

When the deputies arrived at the location, Landreth said, three youths reportedly yelled gang slogans and ran toward the deputies. One allegedly fired a shot in their direction, Landreth said.

After ordering the youths to halt, one of the youths allegedly pointed a handgun at the deputies, Landreth said. An unidentified deputy then fired two rounds from a shotgun at the youths, striking Toriano Harding, 20, and Careill Anderson, 19, both of Los Angeles.

Harding and Anderson, both hit in the chest by gunfire, were taken to Martin Luther King-Drew Medical Center and were listed in stable condition, Landreth said. They were booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

Their companion in the incident fled from the scene, Landreth said.

The shooting is under investigation by the sheriff’s department.
