21 Hurt When Deck Collapses at Party

Police are investigating the owner of an Eagle Rock home where 21 people were injured when a hillside deck collapsed during a raucous party, authorities said Saturday.
Maria Lopez, who was present at the party in her home Friday night, could face charges, police said. The crowd, estimated at 200 to 300 people, consisted mostly of teen-agers and alcohol was widely served, police said.
Police, responding to neighbors’ complaints of excessive noise, had ordered party-goers to disperse when part of a wooden hillside deck suddenly collapsed under the weight of the crowd.
The city’s Building and Safety Department is also expected to investigate the deck’s collapse.
