Nestle Drops a Labeling Claim: After discussions with the Food and Drug Administration, Nestle Refrigerated Food Co. said it will banish the word fresh from labels on its Contadina refrigerated pasta sauce. The plastic-tubbed sauces--six tomato-based, four cream-based and one pesto--have shelf lives of 60 days, except for the pesto at 40 days. They are made without preservatives, but some include tomato concentrate. Nestle was the fourth major company in recent weeks to take the “fresh” out of its labeling claims.
