On the Riviera: The 44th Cannes Film Festival got under way Thursday night with a screening of the first of seven featured American films, “Homicide,” by U.S. playwright David Mamet. Veteran actor Robert Mitchum opened the 12-day extravaganza, which annually draws throngs of movie moguls, stars, agents and film buffs. The biggest American attention getter this year is likely to be Madonna, who is to present “Truth or Dare” at a special late-night screening Monday. The lineup also includes special tributes for the comedy team of Laurel and Hardy, the late British film director David Lean and the 50-year-old Orson Welles movie “Citizen Kane.”
