Zoning Change Aids Equestrian Center

Plans for a new equestrian center north of Ojai were given an initial green light Thursday when the Ventura County Planning Commission agreed to change the zoning for 113 acres on the site.

The project would have to be approved by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, which will consider the matter on May 28.

The Planning Commission voted unanimously Thursday to change the zoning of the land near Lockwood Valley Road from agricultural use to open space, which allows parks and other recreation facilities.

The land includes a private home.

The center, proposed by the Ozena Valley Sportsman’s Club of Ojai, would include a 4,300-square-foot riding stable to house 15 horses.

The center also would include a two-story, 2,550-square-foot building for offices, staff housing and three rooms for overnight lodging.

The Ozena Valley Sportsman’s Club is a private group with about 600 members.
