A celebration to welcome home troops from the Persian Gulf War called “Operation Desert Return, A Patriot’s Thank You of Prayer and Peace Concert” is scheduled to be held this evening at Anaheim Stadium.

During the opening ceremony, parachutists clutching American flags will descend to the stadium floor while the crowd sings the national anthem, said Michael Munoz, organizer of the event. He said marching bands, Christian choirs and celebrities are also expected to be on hand at the event, which will include a fireworks display.

Munoz said he organized the event and reserved the stadium to celebrate Mother’s Day and welcome home troops who fought in the war. “This is a celebration of our troops and our mothers,” he said.

Munoz, 44, president of a mortgage company in Anaheim, has been putting the event together for weeks. He said he paid $5,000 to rent the stadium for the event.

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
