NCR Introduces New Computer: The Dayton, Ohio-based computer maker unveiled its 3600 machine that links together scores of personal computer chips to rival big mainframe computers in speed and power. NCR boasts that its new computer offers four times the power of conventional mainframes at about one-tenth the price. NCR’s new machines, which will not be available until September, aim to provide computing punch by using an unconventional technique known as parallel processing. In parallel processing, hundreds of processors work on different parts of a single problem at the same time. Conventional computers usually work on a problem one step at a time.
